Blast off with us! In our latest podcast episode, I sat down with the visionary Dr. Ben Kaebe, engineer, physicist, and the driving force behind the proposed S.P.I.D.E.R. spaceport in Western Australia. We delved deep into his ground-breaking TEDx Talk, “The Future of Spaceports,” and explored how Australia, specifically WA, is poised to become a major player in the global space race.
John Julius, a former medical professional himself, has created a unique space where healthcare workers can showcase their artistic talents. It’s a testament to the fact that creativity knows no bounds, and that the same passion that drives someone to heal can also ignite a fire for artistic expression.
Dr. Kaebe paints a compelling picture of Australia’s untapped potential. With vast, sparsely populated land, ideal geographic positioning, and a growing focus on innovation, the nation is perfectly situated to capitalise on the burgeoning space economy. But it’s not just about location. Dr. Kaebe highlights the critical need for more spaceports to meet the exploding demand for satellite launches. As he eloquently put it, “There are more satellites to launch than there are spaceports.”
The growing importance of space in national security is undeniable, and Western Australia (WA) is poised to play a pivotal role. The need for robust defencecapabilities in space is driven by several critical factors. Firstly, the ability to respond to potential threats, such as the monitoring activities of foreign satellites (e.g., Chinese satellites over Australia), is essential for safeguarding national sovereignty. WA’s strategic location offers a vantage point for monitoring and responding to such activities.
Secondly, securing Australia’s vast northern border is a paramount concern. Space-based surveillance and communication systems, launched and operated from WA, can provide crucial situational awareness, enhancing border security and maritime domain awareness.
Furthermore, WA’s potential as a launch site and operational base for Australia’s close allies, including those within the AUKUS and Five Eyes partnerships, cannot be overstated. Providing quick and secure access to space for these partners strengthens collaborative defence efforts and enhances regional security.
The ability to maintain control over payloads within Australia’s borders is a critical aspect of national security. This ensures the absolute security and integrity of mission-critical equipment, safeguarding sensitive technologies and preventing potential vulnerabilities. By developing sovereign space capabilities, WA can contribute significantly to Australia’s overall defence posture and strengthen its position as a key player in the evolving space domain.
Our conversation cantered on why Western Australia is primed to be the heart of Australia’s space endeavours. Dr. Kaebe’s proposed S.P.I.D.E.R. project, heavy-launch facility, represents a modern-day gold rush of innovation and sustainability. We discussed the unique advantages of WA:
